Utah Tech's first Big Sky win is still out there
Utah Tech is 0-7 and comes off its bye at 4-4 Cal Poly, which needs this one before Montana State and Northern Arizona.
Utah Tech's first season in the Big Sky reaches its eighth game Saturday at Cal Poly: a 3:00 p.m. MT kickoff (2:00 p.m. Pacific) at Spanos Stadium in San Luis Obispo, streaming on ESPN+ with radio on The Fan Sports Network, 99.5 FM. The Trailblazers are 0-7 overall and 0-4 in conference play since officially joining the league on July 1, and they arrive off an Oct. 17 bye. Their most recent game was a 30-14 loss at Portland State on Oct. 10.
Cal Poly has more riding on Saturday in the standings. The Mustangs, a football-only Big Sky affiliate, are 4-4 overall and 3-2 in the league after a 28-18 loss at Northern Colorado on Oct. 17. Their next two games are at Montana State (6-1) and at home against Northern Arizona (6-2), so this is Cal Poly's chance to get back above .500 before that stretch. One of the Mustangs' two conference losses came against another Utah program: Weber State won 42-34 in double overtime in San Luis Obispo on Oct. 3.
For Utah Tech, the season numbers frame the task. The Big Sky standings list the Trailblazers at 104 points scored and 300 allowed, and 0-4 away from St. George. Their highest-scoring game was a 46-33 home loss to Southern Utah on Oct. 3. After Cal Poly, four games remain: Idaho State and Eastern Washington at Greater Zion Stadium, a trip to UC Davis, and the Nov. 21 finale at Weber State, which airs on KJZZ and KMYU and streams on ESPN+. The first Big Sky win is the target, and Saturday is the first of five chances left to get it.
